Colaba and Elephanta

This weekend I spent my days doing the tourist stuff in Mumbai, on Saturday I went to Colaba, at the Southern most point of Mumbai.

The West side is called Marine Drive and is home to some of the most expensive properties in Asia (apparently). Don’t be fooled by the Blue sea, the water absolutely STINKS.

After that I headed to the Gateway to India, it’s kind of an evil version of Marble Arch. There are many reminders of Britains colonial past in Mumbai, which is kind of wierd if you’re British. Still; uncomfortable history aside, the architecture in Mumbai is beautiful.

After wandering around I went to a very famous bar in Mumbai called “Leopolds” I had fish and chips (give me a break; I’ve eaten Indian food all week) and then headed back on the train.

Then on Sunday I headed back to Colaba again, I saw some more incredible architecture.

Once in Colaba, I got the boat to Elephanta Island. Safi the boat driver let me sit up front and drive the boat. How cool is that?

When we got off the boat at Elephanta I overheard a girl say to her mum “They do like to touch you here don’t they”, which amused me. People here are very tactile, which can be a little wierd for Westeners. Anyway I ended up tagging along with them around elephanta which was nice. Speaking to British people made me quite homesick actually. Here are some pictures of the caves, my new friends and me and the attendant monkeys.

Finally back to Colaba where I said goodbye to my companions and headed back via a big park where literally hundreds of people where playing cricket.

Wow it looks really warm and chilled out over there. I like the pics of the monkey and the wickets on the oval (hee hee). Sounds like you are really enjoying it. (I think this is the kind of thing I’m supposed to be sending instead of the other ’stuff’ I was submitting - sorry bout’ that). Mis u nx

It is very warm, although Mumbai isn’t particulary chilled, it’s the busiest place I’ve ever seen.

I think I might head out of the city to somewhere in the countryside this weekend, it would be nice to be around a few less people for a while.
